On “Respect My Opinion,” “Nasa Atin Pa Rin ang Gawa,” and Toxic Supporters

I posted this on my other Facebook account (Peach Xvision) and would just like to share here din hehe. Haba pala kasi. Hahaha! Puwedeng blog.

On “respect my opinion”

It’s no longer merely an opinion. It’s already a choice, a choice that will affect the whole country.

Sorry, I cannot understand your decision of voting for Marcos. I believe that respect is earned too. So hindi ko fully masabi na I respect your decision. More like . . . I acknowledge that you are voting for the other candidate, no matter how I think VP Leni is more capable of leading.

We don’t really see these values and principles in your candidate. And we really do not get why you will vote for him.

I understand this is a public space; of course, you are free to speak of your sentiments. But when we ask “why are you voting for him,” it’s really a genuine question because we do not understand and we want to.

Is it because you are from Ilocos and you’ve seen how their family made Ilocos prosperous and you want the same for the Philippines? Then tell that to me.

Is it because of your religion? Tell that to me.

Is it just because napapaligiran ka ng toxic supporters of the other side at napipikon ka lang sa kanila so hindi mo na lang titingnan ‘yung plataporma ni VP so do’n ka na lang sa kanya? Then tell that to me as well kahit na parang ang sakit-sakit pakinggan n’on.

Is it because you’re okay to set aside his issues kasi mas nananaig ‘yung kagustuhan mo of an authoritarian leadership na mukhang pinapangako niya? Then tell that to me.

Siguro, siguro lang kasi hindi ko mailagay ang paa ko sa sapatos ninyo, you want the kind of leadership of the Marcoses—authoritarianism, or “enforcement of strict obedience at the expense of personal freedom”—during the times they ruled the country. And you don’t see this kind of leadership sa ibang mga kandidato. That you might dismiss ‘yung issues sa tax, ‘yung sa cases nila before, ‘yung about sa schooling niya . .

But your opinion that there are more superior lives (i.e., the statement “Tama lang na namatay ang drug adik kasi pumatay sila ng inosente” or “Kritiko sila ng gobyerno at mga salot sila kaya dapat naman talaga sila mamatay”), I cannot, but I will acknowledge that we have differences in philosophies . . . that yours is “a tooth for a tooth” and mine is an idea of a justice system employed with knowledgeable lawyers giving the rightful judgment to the criminal.

Sa mga INC contacts ko, I share the same sentiment that I will never understand the concept of bloc voting whereas no one will really see your ballot (and I think it’s a greater sin to your god if you vote for plunderers and allow the country to suffer longer). Pero paano ba . . . it’s not really respecting your decision, e. Kasi maaapektuhan ako as a taxpayer sa mga ganitong decision. 😞 It’s more of acknowledgment; acknowledgment na it is a practice in your religion. Same as how I will never understand how Catholics would wipe their handkerchiefs to statues and then keep them for blessing/luck. I don’t understand these traditions (so I can’t say I respect them), but I acknowledge that they are a part of your religion.

. . acknowledged, not respected. “Acknowledge” to me is more like “okay, ayan na, wala na akong magagawa.” But when I say “respect,” it means I admire your decision, pero hindi nga iyon ang case.

I hope that’s clear and more, uhm, not hurtful. Parang sa inyo ring voters of Marcos siguro. Hindi ninyo maintindihan kung bakit iboboto namin si Leni, but maybe you have acknowledged it already.

On “at the end of the day, nasa atin pa rin ang gawa”

Of course nasa atin ang gawa, but the decisions of our government affect our day-to-day living. Pagod na ako sa tolerance.

We are paying our taxes, and ideally, we MUST feel where these taxes are going to.

. . tapos sila ninanakaw lang ‘yung pinaghirapan mo.

Sa commuting. Ito, real situation. Taga-Cainta, Rizal, ako and ang work ko dati, sa Makati. Pero may hope ako na through good leaders, baka . . . baka lang kaya. Na sana, bumabalik din ang tax na kinakaltas sa akin through laws that think of us commuters. Kaso hindi, e.

I just want to feel the taxes that I am paying. And I want them to be handled by good and well-reputed leaders.

On toxic supporters

I’ve seen here destructive posts of different camps. Gusto ko lang sabihin na there are toxic supporters at ito ang mga hindi natin gustong i-tolerate.

For example, sa aming supporters of TRoPa, we see how BBM supporters ridicule her. Like 2016 pa. She has been called lugaw and lutang. Her pictures have been edited everywhere—her face in a coffin, her face in trash cans, the faces of her daughters as sexy dancers, etc.—her videos spliced. They say na nandaya siya sa election, pero nagpa-recount si Marcos for how many times already, and he even chose the provinces—thus the joke “baka magbrownout.” Do you know how insulting that is, knowing that it was the same election that the president and senators who are seated now had won?

For BBM supporters, are these familiar? Of course. You’ve seen how his pictures were glued to coffins and trash cans as well, the pictures of his sons glued to different people. You’ve seen how spliced videos tarnished his reputation. You’ve heard how a lot wished for his death when he had COVID. And I can empathize how these must have insulted you . . . kasi ganyan din sa amin pero the other way around lang.

Ang point ko, when you fight sana for these issues, sana for all of humanity, hindi lang dahil apektado ang kandidato mo.
